Tips to Building a Great Website from Scratch

A well optimized site brings in more traffic which leads to a busier website. A busy website is a healthy website and search engines like Google LOVE healthy websites. When Google loves your website then forget about it. You now have yourself a potential goldmine in profit.

The trick is getting your website optimized enough so that all those spiders out there find your website inviting and exciting. I did a search not to long ago for some websites based in the Scranton area and I see alot of businesses out there with so much potential. The problem is their sites were not designed with the search engines in mind.

Some sites were nothing more than a few pages of images along with a Contact Us page. That works if someone already knows your business name but what about all those potential customers who don’t know it. That’s untapped line of possible revenue for you to bring in.

Here a just a few of the things we do for our clients and why we are the leader in building optimized websites for the Scranton area:

1 Domain name – You want a domain name that is easily brand-able and more importantly easily recognizable. If you can, make it short and sweet. You want something “mysite.com”. Stay away from keyword domains and aim for branding and name recognition. It’s also great for your search engine optimization services. Keywords in a domain name hold more value now to search engines than ever before.

2 Site Design – Keep it simple. Textual content needs to always out weight the html and visual content. Check that your pages are valid and usable in everything from Lynx to the most obscure of browsers. When designing your site, stick with html 3.2 if you can. The search engine spiders are not to the point yet where they fully understand html 4.0 and the mess it brings. Stay away from the visual stuff like flash, dom, java, java script if you can. Design the structure of the site in a logical, easy to follow manner with directory names hitting the top potential keywords. Don’t fill your site up with clutter and spam just to fill it with keywords.

3 Log and Tracking- Find a good quality logger/tracker that help with inbound referrals based on log files. If your host doesn’t support referrers, then get a new host. That’s just how important it is to have one. You can’t run a modern site without full referrals available in real time, all the time.

4 Content – Probably the single most important aspect of your website ranking well in the search engines is great content. Write one page of quality content either per day or every other. Timely, topical articles work best. Write content dealing with your site’s theme and subject matter and stay away from personal stuff. Discuss topics that a general audience will enjoy. Use lots of text breaks, short sentences, and lots of dashes. Write articles and post that can be read quickly since most users actually scan and don’t read. Employ headers, and bold standout text generously on your pages as logical separators.

5 Spiderlings – Make sure the search engine spiders can crawl your site fully and can do it easily. If the spiders are not able to, go through your site checking over your linking system. Don’t worry if it takes two or three separate spiders to fully index your whole site done.

6 Link backs – Links are the currency in which search engines decide relevancy. When you receive a link request, before linking back to them check the site out. Make sure the site is legitimate and worth linking to. Check their Google rankings and their PageRank value. See if they have any directory listings. Make sure the site deals with a subject matter similar to yours and on topic, as well.

7 Friends and Family – Think of the internet as a popularity contest in a way and networking is a critical piece to a site’s success. Spend some times in similar themed forums trying to establish friends and contacts. Networking pays off through link backs, tips, email exchanges, and put you in the loop of your keyword sector.

The internet is quickly becoming an integral part of our everyday world. Knowing how to build, maintain a website and develop information is a business necessity anymore. It can easily put you and your business in a position to potentially connect with millions of customers.
